In this its fifth generation, Toyota’s 2026 Prius sedan began the hybrid revolution that has now become an alternative to an all-electric sedan for many carmakers. Prius was the leader in hybrid technology and for 2026, their plug-in-hybrid model also has an EV mode for all-electric short trips of 39 miles on a full battery charge for trips to a nearby grocery store or local Home Depot.
Prius Hybrid Plug-In is offered in SE, XSE, XSE Premium trim levels and new Nightshade trim model we were privileged to test. And the 2026 is a real eye-grabber with its sleek, sexy styling lines that looks like it’s moving 55mph standing still. Even its back end with sharply sloping hatchback roofline looks slippery fast.
On the inside, Prius is snazzy with a 12.3-inch infotainment display that serves a host of features such as Apple CarPlay, Android auto connectivity, Wi-Fi, 4G, rearview camera, navigation, some voice control and much more. Below them are easy to operate HVAC controls. Faux carbon fiber adorns the dash and trim.
Atop the dash is a 7-inch digital gauge cluster that serves a multitude of functions, features and alerts.
Heated SofTex front seats are nicely supportive and heavily padded. They’re complimented with a heated steering wheel that heats up quickly.
The console houses a stubby gear selector for the ECVT automatic transmission and it shares the space with a toggle switch for Custom, Sport, Normal and Eco drive modes. There’s also an EV mode that turns the Prius into an electric car. Next to it, and to the side of the console, is a vertical wireless phone charger.
Back seats are soft and comfy and can actually seat three youngsters because the center hump is low allowing for a short-legged passenger.
As a hatchback, the trunk is exceptionally spacious. With the rear seats upright, it offers 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space that measures 31 inches deep, 34.5 inches wide and 25 high. Flip the 60/40 seat backs and cargo capacity expands to 26.7 cubic feet for 67 inches of loading depth. Liftover into the trunk is a low 29 inches for ease of loading.
Prius Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four cylinder and when combined with the electric motors, has a combined 220-hp. With a full battery charge in EV mode, Prius has a range of 40 miles. It’s rated for 44 miles in SE trim model. That’s sufficient for local travel to the grocery stores, Home Depot or other short-range locations.
In EV mode, Prius Hybrid feels like an all-electric car as acceleration is super quick, and quiet. Full throttle acceleration runs can push the torso into the seat backs. The battery can be charged at home with a 120V home outlet for a full charge in eleven hours, or about four hours on a Level 2 charger. And don’t fret if battery power runs out as Prius will continue to run as a standard hybrid. So powered, EPA rates the Prius Hybrid at 114 MPGe or 48 mpg in gasoline only power.
Prius’ ride is smooth and handling is responsive as it nicely absorbs road imperfections and unimproved railroad crossings. Prius Hybrid feels like a much larger car and it parks easily. For winter driving, Prius has a ground clearance of 6.0 inches for mild snow depths.
Price wise, and with a long list of standard safety features such as Toyota’s Safety-Sense 3.0 w/pre-collision, front/rear parking assist w/automatic braking (this one is exceptionally beneficial as it can often brake faster than human action when sensing a collision), safe exit alert, blind spot monitoring w/rear cross traffic alert and more.
With exterior trim items, Prius Nightshade Hybrid carried a base price of $37,795. Add to that Digital Key Capable ($275), 12.3-inch infotainment display ($610), fixed glass roof ($1,000), Key Gloves ($20), alloy wheel locks ($90), carpeted floor and cargo mats ($319) took the bottom line to a reasonable $41,304 with delivery.
During these times when the average price of a new car is $50K, Prius Hybrid is an impressive deal with miserly fuel economy. Not much can compete, especially considering Toyota’s long-time hybrid experience.
Also impressive is warranty coverage of 36-month/36K mile basic new-vehicle warranty; 60-month/60K mile powertrain; corrosion is similar with no mileage limitation; hybrid components is 8 years/100K miles; the hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150K miles along with ToyotaCare plan that covers normal factory scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25K miles plus 24-hour roadside assistance for three years and unlimited miles.
