Volkswagen’s FWD Jetta is an iconic sedan in VWs line-up. And the 2024 version is part of the seventh generation that was introduced in 2019.
Jetta is offered as a Jetta and the more potent GLI, and in 40th Anniversary Edition and Autobahn trim levels, the latter of which we were privileged to test. And judging by its name, it hints that it’s a performer.
Jetta GLI Autobahn sedan has some styling changes that give it a sporty, racy look with a smooth, aerodynamic shape along with red-accent air inlets on the outside of the front bumper and red Brembo-look brakes. Its slippery shape follows through to the rear where the trunk lid sports a slight spoiler and the dual exhaust tips are large 3-inch wide ovals.
Jetta’s interior is also sporty with stainless steel pedal caps, a racy flat bottom heated steering wheel, red trim on the gear selector and stylish leather heated/ventilated front seats. A 10.25-inch touchscreen serves a host of functions including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity, satellite radio, mode selections, rearview camera, climate selections, Beats audio and more. And the large and vivid digital gauge cluster includes a driver information display between the speedo and tach.
Beneath the infotainment screen are large and easy to view and use HVAC controls. And below them a wireless phone charger with receptacles for wired charging.
The gear selector is also stylish with red trim, and it controls the quick shifting 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission that is enhanced with paddle shifters. Sharing the console with the shifter is the mode selection switch for Comfort and Sport mode.
Rear seats have good legroom and headroom and the rear doors open wide for easy ingress/egress. Two adults can fit comfortably in the rear seats although the middle seat can accommodate a short-legged youngster.
Back in fairly spacious trunk, that’s rated for 14.1-cubic feet, it offers 44.25 inches of cargo loading depth or 70 inches when flipping the 60/40 rear seatbacks. Beneath the trunk floor is a space saver tire with the Beats amplifier within it.
The only feature we weren’t thrilled about was the nylon mesh panoramic sunroof shade. Unlike a solid cover, the mesh lets the sun seep in and makes the interior hotter on a 90-degree day.
Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, the Autobahn model develops 228-hp and 258 lb/ft of torque. The base Jetta only puts out 158-hp in comparison. Coupled to the 7-speed Tiptronic automatic, Jetta GLI gets EPA mileage ratings of 26 city, 36-highway mpg. This is impressive as it’s close to hybrid numbers of some competitors’ sedans. There’s certainly no want for power and when selecting Sport mode, it livens acceleration as engine rpm’s increase by about 300 while a sweet rumble emanates from the exhaust tips.
Handling is typically good Euro VW and variable ratio steering makes GLI easy to park. With its adaptive dampeners, body roll is nicely controlled and it can take sharp turns with assurance. Add a limited slip differential and traction is sure-footed.
Shod with 19-inch Hankook tires, GLI rides smooth on smooth roads, but a bit bumpy on unimproved road surfaces. The ride is also quiet.
Price wise, GLI is in line with most of the competition. It carries a base price of $32,585 nicely equipped. Add to that Kings Metallic paint ($395) and delivery ($1,150) and the bottom line reflects a reasonable $34,130. There’s not much out there in this price range. And the Autobahn was nicely loaded with electronic stability control, intelligent crash response w/post collision braking, plus VW’s IQ Drive package that includes travel assist driving assist, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping system, emergency assist, forward collision warning w/automatic emergency braking w/pedestrian monitoring. Included too is active blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alert. All safety features car buyers look for in a new car purchase.
To its credit, the GLI Autobahn received top government safety ratings of a full five overall stars, four for driver/passenger frontal crash, five for front/rear seat side crash and four for rollover. Compare that to the competition.
Warranty wise, GLI is covered by a 4 year/50K mile new car, 7/100K corrosion protection, 2/20K carefree maintenance, 3/36K roadside assistance plus a 5-year VW’s Car-Net Safe and Secure plan that provides automatic crash notification, emergency call, stolen vehicle locator and more.
Jetta GLI Autobahn is performance oriented and it needs to be for the Autobahn. And it’s equally equipped for driving in the USA. The only way is could be better is if it were offered with AWD. But regardless, it’s a compelling sedan and worth consideration if in the market for a proven Euro car.
